The Handbook

The intent of this handbook is to serve as a guide with critical information about being part of IAAC as an employee, and also the place to find details about essential procedures inside our Department: Fab Lab Barcelona. It is also designed to clarify expectations, support good management practices, and ensure consistent, fair treatment for every member of the team.

It is a living document. While we believe it is comprehensive, based on our needs today, we expect that it will change and grow with your help and reflection. To that end, as you review the document, please provide any feedback you have.

Thank you for your work, time and dedication to our global initiative that uses technology as a platform for social impact. We are so proud and grateful to have you as part of our family and we hope this handbook helps you navigate through the intricacies of our complex institution, and make the best out of it.

The Foundation

Fab Lab Barcelona, or Fab Lab Barcelona, is part of the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalunya - IAAC.

The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia is the centre of research, education, production and outreach. Based in Barcelona, Spain, the IAAC has the mission of envisioning the future habitat of our society and building it within the present.

The IAAC follows the digital revolution at all scales, from bits to geography, from micro-controllers to cities, from materials to the territory, in order to expand the boundaries of architecture and design and to also meet the challenges that are now faced by humanity. The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia is an experimental and experiential centre where one learns by doing, through a test of methodology that promotes real solutions.

Beyond its educational and pro-research work, the IAAC is an interdisciplinary and multicultural stable community which seeks permanent contact and cooperation among the hundreds of teachers, researchers, institutions and companies that have all worked with us or who pursue the objective of providing real solutions to the great challenges that humanity faces.

Fab Lab Barcelona

Fab Lab Barcelona is a think-and-make tank, part of the Institute of Advanced Architecture of Catalonia. In collaboration with MIT Centre for Bits and Atoms, it was established as one of the first Fab Lab in the European Union in 2007. With a strategic focus on learning, research and making we use digital fabrication to innovate responses to urgent societal challenges.

Our primary mission is to enable cities and citizens with the tools and knowledge to be more resilient, sustainable and empowered through digital literacy in fabrication, computation, and communications. Our collaborative and rebellious approach aims to democratise the digital sphere and apply it to rethinking the way we live, work and play in cities. We share this approach with remarkable collaborators, who work with us both locally and at distance through our international network.
