How to: Taxonomies - Materials, Processes, Industry

Makes Works Tags / Taxonomies are:

Taxonomies are important to the function / operation of Make Works as they support and advance the Make Works API. Attaching the correct terms from taxonomies to factory listings enables Make Works users to efficiently search listings in your region and ultimately find manufacturers, craftspeople, suppliers they want to work with.

To ensure the platform works well and efficiently for all Make Works users and best represents all the listed factories listed it is very important that Make Works Coordination Team and all regions use the taxonomies in the same way, keep listings as tight and tidy as possible, ensure suggestions for new terms are exactly that, and attach the correct terms to factory listings.

You can search the taxonomy by scrolling through the screen (links are shared above). This is a good way to get your eye in on each of the taxonomy listings and become familiar with the categories and terms how they are structured and what they contain for current and future listings.

It is important you thoroughly search the taxonomy listings to establish if the term you want to attach to a factory listing exists or not.

BEWARE OF SPELLING

If the term you wish to attach to a factory listing does not exist you can suggest it is added to a taxonomy. To do this you firstly need to be confident the term does not already exist (i.e. you have searched, searched again and asked someone else to search!). Then you need to know exactly what the term is and where it should feature in the taxonomy. You are the best person to know this as you have visited the factory, gathered the information and are creating the listing.

When you are sure contact make.works@fablabbcn.org and we will add the new tags to the website. Suggested terms are approved by the Make Works coordination team. The reason for this is to enable us to double check if a term already exists and/ or is being suggested in the right category in the right taxonomy. So a bit like a back up plan!

Here is an example of adding 'LS6090 Laser Cutter' to the Machine taxonomy:

As the model name of a piece of equipment, this term would be listed in the 'Machines' Taxonomy.

As a piece of laser cutting equipment it would feature in the parent node 'Laser Cutter', in turn under the parent node 'Cutters'.

Suggested new terms appear will appear in the drop-down menu when editing listings after being approved by Make Works coordination team.
