# History: Food & Fab Lab Barcelona

While our engagement in [FoodSHIFT2030](https://foodshift2030.eu/) was Fab Lab Barcelona's first deep dive into the world of food, Fab Lab Barcelona has been touching the issue of food for several years. This has mainly happened through projects like:

* [SISCODE](https://fablabbcn.org/projects/siscode-el-barri-circular), our journey through co-creating a solution to food waste in Poblenou.
* [ROMI](https://fablabbcn.org/projects/romi-robotics-for-microfarms-9/), co-developing robotics for microfarms with farmers
* [GROW Observatory](https://fablabbcn.org/projects/grow-observatory), empowering urban agriculture communities with open source monitoring tools
* [Smart Citizen](https://fablabbcn.org/projects/smart-citizen), empowering communities to understand their environment
* [Fabricademy](https://fablabbcn.org/education/postgraduates/fabricademy-barcelona), [Fab Academy](https://fablabbcn.org/education/postgraduates/fab-academy-barcelona) and [Master in Design for Emergent Futures](https://fablabbcn.org/education/master/master-in-design-for-emergent-futures) have seen a boom in the exploration of food-based projects, particularly in the design and integration of biomaterials and the exploration of food waste

Additionally, working towards a model in which cities and their respective bio-regions are able to produce the food that they consume is an essential part of the Fab City and Productive Cities models.

And of course, Barcelona’s own relationship with food and technology helped to lay the groundwork for our efforts. Read more about the context of Barcelona [here](https://fablabbcn.org/blog/lab-life/fab-lab-barcelonas-exploration-into-food-is-central-to-the-fab-city-vision).
